Keep XML identifiers and values intact in Excel

Understand text cells, CSV interpretation, namespaces and long-value handling.

Treat identifiers as text from the start

A value such as 000042 may be an identifier rather than the number forty-two. A 20-digit reference can also exceed a spreadsheet’s exact numeric precision. XML Table Bridge therefore does not infer numbers, dates or Boolean values. It writes parsed values as text in XLSX and strings in JSON, preserving zeros, decimal spelling and words such as false.

If you need calculations, convert selected columns intentionally in your destination application after checking their meaning. Keep the source text alongside the converted number when precision or auditability matters. A successful file conversion does not validate currencies, units, totals or business relationships.

Choose the export that fits your importer

XLSX stores cell types, while CSV is only delimited text. Quoting a CSV value does not require another program to treat it as a string. When importing CSV, explicitly set identifier columns to text. The converter also adds an apostrophe to formula-like CSV strings and reports the count. Original strings remain unchanged in XLSX and JSON.

Excel has a per-cell text length limit. Longer values are replaced by a reference and split into complete, ordered chunks on the Long text worksheet. Reassemble the chunks using their key and part number, or take the full value directly from JSON or CSV. Nothing is silently shortened to fit.

Read namespace-aware column paths

Elements with the same local name can belong to different namespaces. A namespace prefix is only an abbreviation; its URI supplies the identity. Exported paths therefore encode URI and local name together, while attribute segments are distinct from element segments. The preview uses shorter labels, with full paths in column tooltips.

Mapping paths use JSON Pointer escaping, so slash and tilde characters inside namespace URIs cannot masquerade as hierarchy separators. The Mapping sheet retains each table’s source path and complete column path. Use these definitions rather than simplifying headers by eye when building a repeatable import.

The evidence behind the check

Sources & assumptions

Formats, algorithms and supported features are documented below. Check the stated scope and inspect your output before using it.

  • W3C: XML 1.0 ↗

XML character, markup and text-normalization rules; this tool supports a bounded subset without DTDs.

  • W3C: Namespaces in XML ↗

Namespace URI and local name identify elements and attributes independently of prefix spelling.

  • SheetJS: Cell objects ↗

The workbook writes text cells and no executable formulas.

  • OWASP: CSV injection ↗

Spreadsheet applications can interpret CSV text as formulas; protected CSV and literal XLSX have different handling.
